Fishermen’s Trail: 4 stages and when to book

The classic section of the Rota Vicentina: village-to-village walking along the wild edge of the Alentejo, on fishermen’s paths over dunes and eroding cliffs, with storks nesting on the sea stacks and a fresh-fish dinner at the end of every stage. Nothing here is high: the difficulty is sand underfoot, sun overhead and wind off the ocean, and the reward is coast the Algarve lost decades ago. Walk it September to June; the full 13-stage trail carries on to Lagos, and this is the four-day heart it began with.

The 4 stages

DayStageDistanceClimb
1Porto Covo → Vila Nova de Milfontes19.2 km158 m

The line is the trail’s own per-stage mapping, measured at 99% of the published distance with zero invented connector, and shown simplified. Elevation comes from a terrain model, so ascent figures are computed rather than surveyed.

Book these first

Village guesthouses and small hotels, booked directly: there is no refuge system and no central reservation. The villages are small, so spring and autumn weekends sell out first in the places with the fewest beds.

Wild camping is explicitly forbidden on the trail, inside a protected natural park. Campsites exist at or near every stage town; a tent does not remove the booking question here, it moves it.

The association runs an official booking portal that bundles accommodation and luggage transfer; using it supports trail maintenance.

When to go

The association recommends September to June, and means it: July and August are shadeless heat on sand. Spring for the wildflowers, autumn for the warm sea, winter for the empty green version of the coast.
