Hut-to-hut hiking for beginners: which route, and how it works
A first hut tour is not the same as a first walk between villages. There is no shop at the door, the hut decides when dinner is, you sleep in a shared room, and in some huts you chop your own wood. Treksup grades every route and asks a set of readiness questions before it, and some of those questions block the route until you can answer yes. Of the routes in the app where you sleep in mountain huts, refuges or mountain stations, five are graded easy or moderate. Here they are, what a night in each kind of hut is like, how booking works, and what to pack.
Five hut routes for a first hut tour
| Route | Days, distance, highest point | In the app |
|---|---|---|
| Jämtland Triangle, Sweden | 3 days, 45 km, 1,084 m | Easy. The one question you cannot skip: can you walk 15 to 18 km in a day with a light pack? Free in the app. |
| Kungsleden, Abisko to Nikkaluokta, Sweden | 7 days, 104 km, 1,135 m | Moderate. The bar is set highest for a full day in cold, wind-driven rain and for carrying 8 to 12 kg. |
| Laugavegur, Iceland | 4 days, 55 km, 1,055 m | Moderate. Two blocking questions: can you wade a cold, fast river with a pack on (FÍ says at least three have to be waded), and are you equipped for cold rain, wind and possibly snow in July? |
| Triglav Lakes Valley, Slovenia | 3 days, 25 km, 2,374 m | Moderate. Blocking: have you reserved the bed at Koča pri Triglavskih jezerih, and do you know the national park’s rules? There is no second night without that bed. |
| GR221, Mallorca | 8 days, 136 km, 1,190 m | Moderate. No blocking question; the test is a week of consecutive days on cobbled mule paths. |
Days, distances, highest points, grades and questions from the Treksup route data. STF gives 47 km for the Jämtland Triangle and 107 km for Kungsleden, and 1,150 m for the Tjäktja pass.
Which one first?
- Three days, to find out if huts are for you: the Jämtland Triangle, a loop from Storulvån between three staffed mountain stations, all booked online with the Swedish Tourist Association (STF).
- A full week in the wild: Kungsleden. A hut at every stage, gentle gradients, and no road between the ends.
- Short days, but rivers and weather: the Laugavegur. The days are 12 to 16 km; the difficulty is wading and highland weather.
- High mountains in three days: the Triglav Lakes Valley in the Julian Alps, over a stony plateau at about 2,370 m, if the one hut in the valley has your bed.
- Hut tour in spring or autumn: the GR221, the only one of the five that works outside summer.
A step up, and not yet
A step up: the Adlerweg in the Wilder Kaiser is three days and free in the app, but graded hard. Its blocking question: are you sure-footed and free from vertigo on secured paths? On day 2 the Klammlweg is secured with iron clamps for hands and feet, and day 1 climbs about 1,000 m to the hut.
Not for a first hut tour: the Tour du Mont Blanc is graded hard and blocks on heights (fixed metal ladders on open rock on day 10). The Alta Via 1 is hard and blocks on exposed ground with fixed cables. The GR20 is very hard and blocks on steep rock where you need your hands.
What a hut night is like
The app’s check for the Adlerweg sums up an Alpine hut: shared dormitories, your own liner, cash in some places, dinner at a set time and lights out early. But huts differ a lot from one country to the next.
- Alpine club hut, Austria. The Gaudeamushütte, night 1 of the Adlerweg, takes overnight bookings only through the alpine clubs’ online system. Its owner, the DAV section Main-Spessart, lists €10 to €25 a night for alpine club members and €22 to €37 for others, from a mattress place to a twin room.
- Swedish fjäll hut. On Kungsleden the STF huts are self-service: by STF’s own hut pages, you chop your own wood, fetch water from the stream or lake, and wash up and clean after yourself. Abiskojaure, Alesjaure and Sälka have a shop; Tjäktja and Singi do not, so carry food for those. There is no mobile coverage at the huts; the warden has a phone and you can buy call time. A night costs 480 kronor booked ahead as an STF member, 530 kronor paid on the spot, and 100 kronor more without membership. Booked ahead, your bed is guaranteed if you arrive by 18:00. Without a booking you get whatever is left, which can be a bed, a place on the floor or another space.
- Swedish mountain station. On the Jämtland Triangle, Storulvån and Sylarna have a restaurant; Blåhammaren has no restaurant, only a guest kitchen and a shop. The stations take cards only, and bedding and towels are not included in STF’s package.
- Icelandic FÍ hut. On the Laugavegur the huts have mattresses, gas stoves, pots and cold drinking water; you bring a sleeping bag and all your food. Snacks are sold, meals are not. There is no electricity in the huts, and every hut except Hrafntinnusker has showers.
- Slovenian mountain hut. Koča pri Triglavskih jezerih charges the full amount when you book, and cancelling is free until two days before arrival. Ordinary sleeping bags are not allowed inside: bring a clean cotton liner or buy a disposable sheet there.
- Mallorcan refuge. At Tossals Verds on the GR221 a dormitory bed costs €14, dinner €9.50, breakfast €5.50, a picnic €8 and bedding €4.50. The door closes at 22:00 from November to March and at 23:00 the rest of the year, and the room has to be free by 10:00.
Booking basics
Treksup is not a hut operator and sells no beds; it shows each route’s booking system and links to the official one. For these routes there are three patterns:
- One basket for the whole route: STF for the Jämtland Triangle, FÍ for the Laugavegur, the Consell de Mallorca’s central system for the GR221 (except night 1 at Coma d’en Vidal, let only as a whole refuge, by phone). At FÍ a booking starts as a request; you get a payment link, and it is confirmed only when it is paid in full.
- Hut by hut: the Gaudeamushütte through hut-reservation.org, Koča pri Triglavskih jezerih on its own site.
- Book ahead or turn up: the simple huts on Kungsleden can be booked ahead, and that is what STF recommends; turning up without a booking is possible, with the caveat above.
Hut seasons are short, so check them before anything else. On Kungsleden, STF opens its huts and Kebnekaise mountain station from 18 June to 19 September in 2027. In 2027 Storulvån opens on 24 June, Blåhammaren on 1 July and Sylarna only on 15 July. The Laugavegur huts open on about 25 June on average. Country by country, with opening days: how hut booking works.
What to pack for huts
From the packing lists in the app, the things that are specific to huts:
- A sleeping-bag liner. Compulsory in alpine club huts, which provide the blankets. The staffed Swedish huts provide blankets and pillows but not bedding. In the Slovenian hut a liner is the rule.
- A sleeping bag only where the hut says so, as on the Laugavegur. On the Adlerweg it is two kilos of nothing.
- Earplugs and an eye mask. Somebody in the room always leaves at five, with a head torch on.
- Light indoor shoes or sandals. Boots stay at the door.
- The right money. Cash in small notes in Austria, where a card is not certain at a hut; a bank card in Sweden, where the stations take cards only.
- A towel and a power bank. Huts do not hand out towels, the simple huts have no charging at all, and the socket in a staffed hut has a queue.
- Your booking confirmation, saved offline, and your alpine club or STF membership card, which lowers the price.
- Food for the days without a shop: Tjäktja and Singi on Kungsleden, and every day on the Laugavegur.
For fitness, days in a row and the pack you carry, the nine checks in how to know you’re ready for a multi-day trek apply to huts too.
The readiness check, before the route
Treksup asks the questions above for each route, says what to do when an answer falls short, and shows how its huts book. Seven routes are open in full, free on iPhone: the Jämtland Triangle, the Adlerweg in the Wilder Kaiser and the Presidential Traverse, which go hut to hut, and the Escapardenne, the Mullerthal Trail, the Fishermen’s Trail and the West Highland Way. Kungsleden, the Laugavegur, the Triglav Lakes Valley and the GR221 are in the paid plan.

What is a good hut-to-hut hike for beginners?
In the Treksup app five hut routes are graded easy or moderate: the Jämtland Triangle and Kungsleden in Sweden, the Laugavegur in Iceland, the Triglav Lakes Valley in Slovenia and the GR221 on Mallorca. The Jämtland Triangle is the shortest, three days and 45 km, and the only one graded easy.
Do I need a sleeping bag in mountain huts?
Usually a liner, not a sleeping bag. Alpine club huts provide blankets and expect a liner, and the Slovenian hut on the Triglav Lakes Valley does not allow ordinary sleeping bags inside. On the Laugavegur in Iceland you do bring a sleeping bag, and your own food.
Can I turn up at a hut without a booking?
On most hut routes, do not count on it: the Gaudeamushütte books only online, and Koča pri Triglavskih jezerih only through its own site. On Kungsleden the STF huts take walkers without a booking, but you get whatever is left, which can be a place on the floor; a booking guarantees a bed if you arrive by 18:00.
Is the Tour du Mont Blanc a good first hut trek?
Treksup grades it hard, and its readiness check blocks on heights: day 10 has fixed metal ladders on open rock. It makes a better second hut tour than a first.
