Do you need to book the Tour du Mont Blanc? What happens without a booking
For a refuge bed in July or August: yes, book. The official TMB site calls booking strongly recommended, even essential in high season, and two days after summer 2027 opened, the Refuge des Mottets already showed 21 of its 31 July nights as full. Without a booking you are left with a tent and the few campsites that take walkers as they come, under bivouac rules that change by commune and by country. And the French communes on the route plan to require a booking for every night from spring 2027.
What the official site says
The platform of the TMB refuge wardens’ association, montourdumontblanc.com, answers the question in its FAQ: booking is strongly recommended, even essential in high season. Its home page adds that in high season the refuges and other places are often full several months ahead. Its booking guide says that between mid-July and mid-August you really have to book early, and that June and September can be more flexible.
The same guide notes that cancellations do happen, especially several weeks before a date, so a refuge that shows full today is worth checking again later.
What happens if you turn up without a booking
No page we read says what a refuge does when a walker arrives unbooked on a full night, and none promises a bed. What the sources do say:
- Rifugio Elisabetta, night 3 of the classic tour, writes on its own site that booking is compulsory.
- Half board is booked with the bed. The platform calls the night with dinner and breakfast the usual booking, so the meal is planned for the walkers who booked.
- The Refuge de la Croix du Bonhomme is closed until summer 2029, the FFCAM says, with no accommodation and no reception. It was the only shelter at the top of the Bonhomme cols, so on day 2 there is nothing between La Balme and Les Chapieux.
- Looking for a bed in the afternoon means looking on the cols, which is where, as the Treksup safety brief warns, heat storms build in the second half of the day.
Who takes the booking
Most beds are on one platform. A few classic nights are not.
- The platform: on 19 October 2026 it listed 44 refuges, gîtes and hotels, all open for summer 2027 since 15 October 2026.
- Their own channel: Rifugio Elisabetta (email or phone), Rifugio Bonatti (its own form, which on 19 October took only winter dates), Rifugio Elena (its own site, online since 15 October 2026), the Refuge du Lac Blanc (its own site, showing only its 2026 season), La Flégère (requests from 5 January 2027 at 00:01), the Chalet des Contamines (the FFCAM system, during January 2027) and the hotels of Courmayeur.
Every night in order, with the places in each village: the TMB huts in order.
Book in the right order
The TMB 2027 booking plan tells you which bed opens when and in which order to book, so the scarce nights come first: every night of the classic eleven-day tour, how it books, a fallback in the same valley, and a calendar file that reminds you on the right days. PDF in English, Dutch and French, €29 once. It books nothing and holds no beds.
The TMB 2027 booking plan · €29With a tent instead: the rules per country
- France: commune by commune. In Chamonix camping and bivouac are banned, except a high-altitude bivouac from sunset to sunrise, and never at Lac Blanc or around the Col des Posettes. Les Houches and Saint-Gervais tolerate one night, sunset to sunrise. Vallorcine allows a tent only with the landowner’s permission, 19:00 to 09:00, given automatically above 1,700 m. In the Contamines-Montjoie nature reserve, from 15 June to 15 September, there is no bivouac below 2,500 m except in two official areas, Pont de la Rollaz and La Balme, which must be booked on reserve-bivouac74.fr. The Vallée des Glaciers below the Col de la Seigne allows no bivouac.
- Italy: no. All camping is banned across the Aosta Valley, even for less than 24 hours, and bivouac is banned below 2,500 m, which covers almost all of the Italian section. The fine is €566.
- Switzerland: campsites only. Bivouac is generally banned. The exceptions are one night, not in a group, above the tree line, or an emergency. In Valais you camp on campsites or official pitches.
Stage by stage, with every campsite: the Tour du Mont Blanc with a tent.
Campsites that take you as you come
| Where | What the campsite says |
|---|---|
| Les Houchesstart and finish | Camping Bellevue, about 100 m from the start: tents cannot be reserved. Closed for the winter, back during May 2027. |
| La Foulynight 6 | Camping des Glaciers: walkers on the Tour du Mont Blanc may arrive without a booking. In 2026 the upper part was closed for a hydrological risk; the season ran to 4 October. |
| Champexnight 7 | Camping Les Rocailles: no booking possible for stays, and priority to walkers sleeping in tents in July and August. Open 1 June to 30 September. |
| Arpetteabove Champex | The opposite: the Relais d’Arpette needs a booking for its campsite. It reopens in June 2027. |
2027: a booking for every night on the French side
On 16 September 2026 the seven French communes on the route, Vallorcine, Chamonix, Les Houches, Saint-Gervais, Les Contamines-Montjoie, Beaufort and Bourg-Saint-Maurice, unanimously approved the principles of a charter with the refuge wardens, campsites, guides, transport companies and the State:
- capacity limited to the places that exist, with a booking every night;
- wild bivouac banned;
- bivouac areas with toilets and water, a set capacity and a fee per pitch;
- a “brigade verte” to check bookings and behaviour.
The aim is to have it working in spring 2027. It is not a rule yet: the final text was due in mid-October 2026, and the communes expect to sign before the end of 2026. It is a French charter: every commune in the press release is on the French side of the tour.
Booking in time, from today
- On the platform, now. Book the night with the fewest options first, as the platform itself advises. On the classic stages that is the night around the closed Croix du Bonhomme: Nant Borrant, La Balme, Les Chapieux or Les Mottets.
- By email, now: Rifugio Elisabetta, which has published no 2027 date.
- Keep checking Bonatti’s form, which on 19 October 2026 took only its winter season.
- In January: La Flégère on 5 January 2027 at 00:01, the Chalet des Contamines during the month.
- Before you pay: the platform refunds 80% of the deposit if you cancel more than 30 days ahead, and nothing within 30 days unless you took its insurance.
- Hold one fallback for a night that is not confirmed yet, and let it go the day the real booking comes through.
Treksup is not a hut operator and books nothing: you book with the refuges yourself.
The rules in your pocket
The Tour du Mont Blanc’s safety brief in Treksup carries the bivouac rules per commune and country, and it is free, like the trail conditions, alerts and weather on every route. The stage detail and where to sleep come with the paid tier. 7 routes are open in full for free.

Can you walk the Tour du Mont Blanc without booking?
You can walk it without a permit, but for refuge beds in July and August, book: the official site calls booking strongly recommended, even essential in high season. With a tent, some campsites take walkers without a booking, such as the Camping des Glaciers in La Fouly and Les Rocailles in Champex, but wild camping is banned on most of the route.
Do you need a permit for the TMB?
Not today: there is no permit and no fee to walk it. The French communes on the route plan to require a booking for every night on their section from spring 2027; the charter was not signed on 19 October 2026.
When do refuge bookings open for summer 2027?
The platform of the TMB refuge wardens opened on 15 October 2026. La Flégère opens on 5 January 2027 at 00:01 and the Chalet des Contamines during January 2027. Rifugio Bonatti (summer), Rifugio Elisabetta and the Refuge du Lac Blanc had published no date on 19 October 2026.
Does Treksup sell refuge beds?
No. Treksup is not a hut operator, takes no commission and holds no beds. You book with the refuges yourself.
