Walker’s Haute Route vs Tour du Mont Blanc: the numbers, the huts and who each one suits
Both start in the Chamonix valley and share their first cols, then go separate ways. In the Treksup app’s figures the Walker’s Haute Route is three days longer, about 2,700 m more climbing and over 400 m higher, ends in Zermatt rather than back where it began, and books hut by hut. The Tour du Mont Blanc books most nights on one platform, has a way off on every stage, and is the gentler first alpine trek of the two.

Distances and climbing are the app’s lines: the TMB on the OpenStreetMap main line with the published stage plan’s figures, the Haute Route on swisstopo’s trail network with its altitudes. The TMB’s highest point is the Grand Col Ferret’s surveyed height; the Haute Route’s is the line’s own reading on the Mont Fort to Prafleuri day.
Where they overlap
The Haute Route’s second and third days, Argentière over the Col de Balme to Trient and Trient over the Fenêtre d’Arpette to Champex, run on ground the TMB also uses, in the other direction to the classic anticlockwise tour. The app warns that Trient and Champex share their beds with TMB walkers and go early. After Champex the Haute Route turns east into the Val de Bagnes and leaves the TMB behind.
How hard each one is
Tour du Mont Blanc
- Six to eight hours a day, 600 to 1,200 m up and the same back down, on steep rock, loose gravel and uneven ground.
- No climbing skills needed. You need to be steady on steep ground with a pack.
- The exposed bits have a way round: the Tré-le-Champ ladders on day 10 have a valley bypass, and the Fenêtre d’Arpette is a variant, with the Bovine route as the low option.
- Snow lingers on the high cols into early July. Since 17 August 2026 there is no shelter at the top of the Bonhomme cols: the Croix du Bonhomme refuge is closed until summer 2029.
Walker’s Haute Route
- Five to eight hours a day and over 1,000 m of ascent on six of the fourteen stages, with loose moraine, boulder fields and steep scree in the middle third.
- The app asks for solid alpine hillwalking experience: no climbing, but sure feet on loose steep ground and the judgement to swap a col for a valley.
- Old snow lies on the cols above 2,800 m into July; early in the season that means an ice axe and crampons.
- With the Pas de Chèvres ladders closed for rockfall (last checked for the app on 2 August 2026), Arolla is reached over the Col de Riedmatten, whose gully is steep, loose and needs hands.
- The Europaweg at the end crosses active rockfall ground. On 19 October 2026 its operators listed the stretch from Springelboden to Eggenstadel as closed, with a detour down to Täsch.
- Two stages climb more than 1,600 m, and there is no rest day in the fourteen.
The huts, and how they book
Walker’s Haute Route: hut by hut
- Cabane du Mont Fort (night 5): online booking on its own site, or by email. Half board was CHF 135, CHF 115 for Swiss Alpine Club members, at its 2025/2026 prices.
- Cabane de Prafleuri (night 6): online booking is compulsory, says its own site, read on 12 October 2026.
- Cabane de Moiry (night 9): through its own booking site.
- Europahütte (night 13): by phone or email to the Brantschen family in Randa, open from late June to mid or late September. Half board CHF 90 plus CHF 4 tourist tax.
- Hotel Schwarzhorn, Gruben (night 11): booked by email, open roughly mid-June to mid-September; its site gave our reader no text, so check the dates there.
None of these had published a date for summer 2027 bookings when we read them.
Tour du Mont Blanc: mostly one platform
The platform of the TMB refuge wardens opened all 44 of its places for summer 2027 on 15 October 2026. Four classic nights book elsewhere: Rifugio Elisabetta by email or phone, the Courmayeur hotels direct, Rifugio Bonatti on its own form and La Flégère from 5 January 2027 at 00:01. The platform’s FAQ puts a dormitory night with half board at about €65 to €95. Every night in order: the TMB huts in order.
Treksup is not a hut operator on either route: you book with the huts yourself.
Getting there and back
- Both are reached from Geneva airport. A shared shuttle to Chamonix or Les Houches costs about €45 a seat with Mountain Drop-offs.
- The TMB is a loop, so you take the same shuttle back.
- The Haute Route ends in car-free Zermatt. The Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn runs to Visp every half hour in about an hour and ten minutes, and direct InterRegio trains run from Visp to Geneva twice an hour in about 2 hours 20. With a car left in Chamonix, the rail loop back via Visp, Martigny and Vallorcine takes about 4 hours 10, with three changes.
Which one for whom
Pick the Tour du Mont Blanc if it is your first alpine hut trek, if you want most nights booked on one site, if you want a way off every day (the app lists one for each stage: lifts at Bellevue, La Flégère and Planpraz, the valley buses), or if your dates are in June. You finish where you started.
Pick the Walker’s Haute Route if you have done a hut trek in the Alps and want something longer, higher and rougher, can go from mid-July, are steady on loose ground, and do not mind writing to each hut and paying Swiss hut prices. The app lists no escape routes for its stages; its natural exits are Le Châble, Arolla and Zinal, all with buses.

Both routes in Treksup
The Walker’s Haute Route and the Tour du Mont Blanc are paid routes in Treksup: every stage, water, where to sleep and how each hut books come with the paid tier. Their safety briefs, trail conditions, alerts and weather are free, as on every route. 7 routes are open in full for free.
Get Treksup on the App StoreGoing for the TMB? The TMB 2027 booking plan gives every night, how it books and when it opens, for €29.
Questions
Is the Walker’s Haute Route harder than the Tour du Mont Blanc?
Yes, on every figure in the Treksup app: 14 stages against 11, 13,047 m of climbing against 10,380 m, a highest point of 2,964 m against 2,537 m, and more loose ground, late snow and rockfall detours. Both are graded hard in the app and neither needs climbing skills.
Can I do the Walker’s Haute Route as my first multi-day trek?
The app asks for solid alpine hillwalking experience and advises a full week of consecutive mountain days somewhere first. The Tour du Mont Blanc is the easier first alpine hut trek of the two.
How do you book the huts on the Walker’s Haute Route?
Hut by hut. Cabane du Mont Fort, Cabane de Prafleuri and Cabane de Moiry book online on their own sites, the Europahütte by phone or email, and Hotel Schwarzhorn in Gruben by email. There is no shared platform like the TMB’s.
Does Treksup book the huts?
No. Treksup is not a hut operator, takes no commission and holds no beds. You book with the huts yourself.
