GR 131 Lanzarote: 5 stages and when to book
The whole of Lanzarote on foot, north to south: from the harbour of Órzola over the highest ground on the island to the old town of Teguise, across the open middle, through volcanic country to Yaiza and down to the sea at Playa Blanca. Every stage ends in a village or a town. Nothing here is high and nothing is technical: the difficulty is sun, wind and an island with no water, and the reward is a walking season that runs straight through the winter. It is one of the Caminos Naturales of the Spanish ministry of agriculture: 71 km in five stages.
Start: Órzola. Finish: Playa Blanca.
The 5 stages
| Day | Stage | Distance | Climb |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Órzola → Haría | 12.6 km | 423 m |
| 2 | Haría → Teguise | 12.5 km | 347 m |
| 3 | Teguise → San Bartolomé | 9.2 km | 89 m |
| 4 | San Bartolomé → Yaiza | 22.9 km | 371 m |
| 5 | Yaiza → Playa Blanca | 14 km | 60 m |
Built from the trail’s five per-stage mappings in OpenStreetMap. Three stages are walked in mapped order; on the first and the last the mapping holds stray pieces, so the longest connected line is kept. Measured at 71.9 km against a published 71, with 0.4 km of bridged gaps. Elevation comes from a terrain model, so ascent figures are computed rather than surveyed.
Book these first
Village hotels and guesthouses in Haría, Teguise, San Bartolomé and Yaiza, booked one by one: there is no hut system and no central reservation for this trail.
- Teguise (no one-night bed found for a January date)
- Haría (few rooms)
- San Bartolomé (few places to stay)
- Christmas and New Year, when some local businesses close
The other way to walk it, which the guidebooks describe, is to stay in Arrecife for the whole trip and take the bus to and from each stage. The buses run all year, on a different timetable at weekends and on public holidays.
Wild camping is officially forbidden on the island.
When to go
