GR221 · Ruta de Pedra en Sec: 8 stages and when to book
The Tramuntana traverse: la Trapa’s ruined monastery to the bay of Pollença on centuries-old cobbled paths, through olive terraces a thousand years old, villages like Valldemossa and Deià, the great stone staircase of the Barranc de Biniaraix, and a col at nearly 1,200 m above the monastery at Lluc. The island government runs the refuges on one booking system and built the trail its name: pedra en sec, dry stone, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape underfoot. Spring and autumn are the seasons; summer is for the heat-hardened only.
Start: Sant Elm (la Trapa). Finish: Port de Pollenca.

The line follows the Consell de Mallorca’s own stage scheme via the per-stage mapping, with under 1% bridged connector, and starts at Sant Elm rather than the Consell’s Port d’Andratx. Elevation comes from a terrain model, so ascent figures are computed rather than surveyed.
Book these first
The mountain refuges are run by the Consell de Mallorca and booked through its single central system: one search books the whole chain, night by night. Six are bookable online: Tossals Verds, Son Amer, Muleta, Pont Romà, Can Boi and Galatzó.
- Tossals Verds (small and remote)
- Son Amer (Lluc)
- Muleta (Port de Sóller)
Night 1 at Coma d’en Vidal is the exception: it is not in that system, and it is let only whole, all 24 places, by phone with the Consell. For one walker or a small group, plan a longer first day to Estellencs or pick the chain up at Esporles.
Guides put the booking window at about 130 days ahead on a rolling basis; the Consell itself does not publish one. For a spring walk, be on the site the morning your dates open.
When to go
February to May is the classic window: almond blossom, green hills, cool climbing. October gives it a second run. July and August are heat management on bare rock, and the refuges book out months ahead for the spring weeks.
