Historical Way: 4 stages and when to book
The inland half of the Rota Vicentina: old paths between villages, through cork oak forest, small farms and river valleys a few kilometres behind the coast. Four days from Cercal do Alentejo to Odeceixe: first the hills of São Domingos, then a long day down to the Mira river at Odemira, then two gentler days along streams to the edge of the Algarve. No sand and no cliff edges; the difficulty is distance, and in winter, rain. The association that maintains it recommends September to June. Its full Historical Way has thirteen stages and 263 km and starts two stages further north, in Santiago do Cacém. Those two were rerouted in 2024 and are not drawn here, because the open map has not caught up with them.
Start: Cercal do Alentejo. Finish: Odeceixe.
The 4 stages
| Day | Stage | Distance | Climb |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Cercal do Alentejo → São Luís | 20.3 km | 448 m |
| 2 | São Luís → Odemira | 24.9 km | 229 m |
| 3 | Odemira → São Teotónio | 18.7 km | 267 m |
| 4 | São Teotónio → Odeceixe | 17.3 km | 172 m |
Built from the trail’s single mapped line in OpenStreetMap, cut at four of the stage ends the association publishes: every stage lands within 4% of its published distance, and the line sits a median 5 m from the association’s own current track. On the last stage 1.2 km is routed along a mapped road the relation leaves out, and about five kilometres are drawn coarsely on the map, up to 200 m from that track. Elevation comes from a terrain model, which counts about 2,000 m of ascent where the association gives 1,116 m; the high points agree, so the difference is small up-and-down, not height.
Book these first
Guesthouses, country houses and small hotels, booked directly or through the association: there is no refuge system on this trail.
- São Luís (three places in the association’s directory)
- São Teotónio (one hotel and five country houses)
- Easter and long weekends
The map this app reads knows no place to sleep in São Luís and only a campsite in São Teotónio. The association’s own directory lists three places under São Luís and six under São Teotónio, most of them country houses. A country house can lie outside the village: ask how far it is from the trail, and whether they collect walkers, before you book.
Winter opening, as the association’s directory stated it on 10 October 2026: open all year for at least one partner house at Cercal, São Luís, Odemira and Odeceixe. For São Teotónio it states no season, but ten places there were on sale on Booking.com that day for one night on 12 January 2027, among them Casa Jasmim in the town (€117 for two) and the Enigma hotel, 5.3 km out (€99).
When to go
The association recommends September to June. Winter is mild, rarely below 11 °C by day, and the wettest time of the year; spring is the best of it. July and August are heat and fire risk.
- JanuaryMild, and wet in spells
- FebruaryLate winter, the streams at their fullest
- MarchSpring opens
- AprilPeak spring, peak demand
- MayEarly summer without the heat
- JuneThe season’s warm edge
- JulyOutside the recommended season
- AugustThe hottest month
- SeptemberThe season reopens, still hot
- OctoberWarm autumn
- NovemberThe rains return
- DecemberQuiet midwinter
