Mullerthal Trail: 6 stages and when to book

Sandstone labyrinths, moss-hung stream valleys and the three-fall Schiessentümpel, walked as a six-day loop out of Echternach and back. The Mullerthal is a Leading Quality Trail and it feels like one: immaculate red-M waymarking, a village with beds and dinner at the end of every stage, and stairways cut between blocks of rock that make an hour feel like an expedition. Nothing here is high or exposed, the season never really closes, and it is two hours from Brussels. If you want to find out whether multi-day walking is for you, this is where.

The line is the trail’s own three official loops, cut at the villages its published six-stage plan cuts them at, and measured at 110.7 km against a published 112. Elevation comes from a terrain model, so ascent figures are computed rather than surveyed.

Book these first

No central booking system: each hotel, guesthouse or campsite takes its own reservation.

The trail organisation lists accommodation partners along the route on its own site.

Echternach is the natural start and finish, and the easiest place to add a night at either end.

When to go

Walkable all year, at its best April to October. Spring for full waterfalls and new beech, September for warm quiet days. Winter is genuinely good in frost, with the rock formations visible through bare trees, but eight hours of light against a 23 km stage needs planning.
