Adlerweg · Wilder Kaiser: 3 stages and when to book

The opening of Tirol’s flagship trail, and the shortest way into real alpine walking this library has: three days from St. Johann in Tirol along the south face of the Wilder Kaiser to Kufstein, sleeping at the Gaudeamushütte under the wall. Day two crosses the Klammlweg on iron clamps to the highest hut in the massif, and it is the reason this route asks for a head for heights before anything else. A long weekend, a night train from the Low Countries, and limestone the whole way.

The 3 stages

DayStageDistanceClimb
1St. Johann in Tirol → Gaudeamushütte12.4 km920 m
2Gaudeamushütte → Hintersteiner See13.9 km621 m
3Hintersteiner See → Kufstein13.5 km615 m

The line is the Adlerweg’s own first three official stage relations, assembled with zero seams and zero invented connector. Elevation comes from a terrain model, so ascent figures are computed rather than surveyed, and the measured stage distances run slightly longer than the figures Tirol publishes.

Book these first

The Gaudeamushütte takes overnight bookings only through the alpine clubs’ online system, hut-reservation.org.

It opened 13 May and closes 14 October in 2026, and weather can move both dates.

Alpine club membership (ÖAV, DAV or a partner club) cuts the overnight rate and is worth the annual fee for two hut nights.

When to go

The hut season decides it: the Gaudeamushütte ran 13 May to 14 October in 2026, and night one has no alternative. June and September are the pick. Early season means old snow on the Klammlweg’s secured ground; midsummer means afternoon thunderstorms on an exposed traverse.
