Alta Via 2: 13 stages and when to book
The long one. Alta Via 2 runs the width of the Dolomites from Bressanone to Feltre, across eight mountain groups and three provinces, and it is harder than its famous neighbour in every way that counts: longer, higher, more often on cable, and far emptier at the southern end. The route authority asks for walkers who do not suffer from vertigo and have a good sense of direction.
Start: Bressanone. Finish: Feltre.

Book these first
The Pale di San Martino rifugi are the pinch point. Rosetta and Pradidali sit in a group that day walkers reach by cable car, so they compete with people who are not walking the route at all.
- Rifugio Pisciadù
- Rifugio Rosetta
- Rifugio Pradidali
- Rifugio Mulaz
Rifugio Bruno Boz and the Bivacco Feltre on the southern stages are small. The bivacco is unstaffed and cannot be booked at all.
Half board is the normal booking. Say when you book if you want a packed lunch, because there is nowhere to buy one on most stages.
When to go
The route authority gives the season as the end of June to the end of September. Outside that the rifugi are shut and there is nowhere to sleep.
